The celebration of women-owned businesses each October traces back to 1988, when the U.S. Congress passed legislation designating October as National Women’s Business Month—an initiative that later grew to emphasize small, women-owned businesses.
Today, women run approximately 31% of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) globally—translating to around 224 million women-owned businesses worldwide. In the U.S., the growth has been especially robust: over the past two decades, women-owned businesses have surged 114%, compared to a 44% increase for all businesses (A Matter of Rhyme).
